About the INSPIRE-Math Fellowship
Innovative New Spaces for Practice and Rehearsal in Teacher Education (INSPIRE-Math) is a new fellowship program lead by the MIT Teaching Systems Lab (TSL) for all who currently teach or coach math in a district or charter school in Boston for all or part of their day in grades 3-8.
Core Fellowship Activities
Throughout the INSPIRE-Math fellowship, MIT INSPIRE-Math staff and fellows will work together to practice math teacher talk moves and questioning strategies that help elicit and evaluate students’ mathematical thinking and improve the robustness and accuracy of their responses. We will hone our craft through practice spaces — learning environments that are inspired by games and simulations to give teachers low-stakes environments to practice important skills in teaching.
Over the course of the fellowship year, fellows will play with and modify existing practice spaces, develop new practice spaces, and share these tools and learning with their colleagues for fun and powerful practice-based professional learning experiences. During the 2019-2020 fellowship program, fellows collaborated to create a suite of new practice space scenarios in two practice spaces originally designed by the MIT Teaching Systems Lab, Eliciting Learner Knowledge (ELK) and Teacher Moments. For more information, check out the individual practice space webpages!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the next INSPIRE-Math fellowship program will take place during the 2021-2022 school year.
