Sara Vogel, PhD, is a recent graduate of the Urban Education doctoral program at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She studies the intersection of computer science education, bilingual education and social justice pedagogy. A former NYC public school bilingual teacher, come September, Sara will become a post-doctoral fellow on a project she co-founded in 2017: Participating in Literacies and Computer Science (PiLaCS), a National Science Foundation-funded project which aims to leverage the diverse language practices of bilingual youth as resources in their computer science learning. A former instructor of foundational courses in bilingual education at CUNY-Hunter College School of Education, she was also previously a Research Assistant for the CUNY-New York State Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals, where she coached classroom teachers and supported school leaders to consider how the theory of translanguaging from bilingual education might shape their practice. She holds a Master’s degree in bilingual education from CUNY – Hunter College, and a BA in Urban Studies from Columbia University.
